Sight Words

Here are some practical and helpful ideas on ways to make sight word practice fun for all!

Flash Card Games

Can you find? Lay cards on table, face up. Ask your child to find a given word. If they find it, they keep it. Keep going until all cards are picked up.

Who has more?  Give flash cards to your child. If they read the word within 5 seconds, they keep the card. If not, you keep the card. The goal is that your child has more than you at the end of the game.

Concentration Using double copies of the words, take turns turning over two cards at a time, trying to make a match. The player must read the word correctly to get the match.

Other Activities

Using a highlighter or crayon help your child to find his/her sight words in print (newspaper, magazine etc.)

Read to your child, pointing to the words so that he/she sees the words in books.

Put magnetic letters on the refrigerator or on a metal cookie sheet. Let your child make their words.

Ordinal Number

This week in Team Teaching we have been learning about ordinal number.
We played a fun activity with Múinteoir Michelle where we lined up our toy cars and used the language of ordinal number to talk about their place in the line i.e. first, second, third, last.

Writing-Letter 'd'

This week Junior Infants have been learning to write the letter 'd'.

We have been doing lots of different activities to help us write this letter.

Tracing the letter

Forming the letter with play dough.

Writing the letter with chubby markers

Free Writing

This week we had lots of fun learning our new sight words. Some of us have even started writing our sight words during our Free Writing time.

Take a look at our work.

Snowy Village

Junior Infants really enjoyed creating their very own Snowy Village.

Firstly we designed the type of house
that we wanted in our village.
Some of us chose bungalows and others
chose apartments and cottages.

Next we carefully cut out the shapes of our houses using our own scissors. We also remembered to cut out the windows and doors!

Then we used glue to stick these on to our snowy background which we had painted earlier.

We are very proud of our work.

Our Christmas Show

We worked very hard preparing for our Christmas show. Thank you to everyone who came to see us on the night. We really enjoyed performing on the stage.

Back to School

We had a great first week back in school. Although some things in school are a little different this year we are all so delighted to be back...
